Hair advice - please give me your opinion!!

My hair is too long and unruly at present. It’s rather flyaway. I’ve tried new shampoos but they haven’t helped. Grey hair is rather more porous and brittle than hair with natural colour. I'm not happy at all with it.
Today - photo 1

Last week - you can see how flyaway it is - photo 2

Also last week - photo 2

The main thing, though, is that it hasn’t been trimmed for 9 weeks and it grows quite quickly. I’d had it a bit longer than in some of the photos. My hairdresser has been unable to see me and I need to go to a new one. The question is, though - how short do I get it cut?

I’ll include photos of various options on me in real life and I would greatly appreciate your opinion. They're from various dates and not in order

Options are, I think

  • To trim but make no shorter - effectively this is continuing to grow my hair. Advantages are that I can currently tie my hair back for golf. It can look very nice when just washed but quickly looks rather windswept.
  • To make a bit shorter but keep the bob
  • To make a lot shorter
  • Other
I'd be very grateful for your opinion
Thank you

  1. Hi Anne, I really like your hair short so prefer you in photos 4 and 5. I think photo 5 has a more definite style so that's probably the one I'd pick. With your hair shorter it lightens your jawline, gives you a sort of face lift! You've got a lovely hair colour too, uniformly light grey, it's great! Joyce

    1. Thank you, Joyce. I do like a more definite style. I agree that longer hair can make the face look droopy which I fear I have at present!I have had so many different responses - at my class tonight, as many different responses as there were people. I think I'll go for mid...

  2. I like your hair quite short anne and it looks thick enough to carry off a shorter look. I like photos 5 and 9. Those styles would ultimately be quite easy to manage and you would have a less of a windswept look playing golf! It also makes your face look thinner. I am so looking forward to seeing what you decide. Good luck x

    1. Thank you, Dawn. I like these too. And I don't like being windswept! I might have been thinner in some of those photos though I'm on the way down again!

  3. Hello Anne. I also prefer style no. 5 and think the style really suits your face. I hope you are happy with whatever style you choose. Looking forward to seeing the new hairdo.

    1. Thank you, Carole. I need to decide where to go! I hope to get somewhere next week. Cost of course comes into it.

    1. Thank you, Susan. 5,6 and 9 between them have gained most votes. So it will be shorter than it is. I need to find a recommended hairdresser, probably not one of the ones (there are many!) I've been to before.

  6. I too am commenting for the first time. In reviewing all the pictures I am struck by what a good photo you take, always pleasant and happy looking. And lovely silver hair! In complete ignorance of your life and thus the context of your hair, 9 is my favorite for hairstyles. On the other hand, being able to tie my hair back or up is very important to me, and I hate having to go for cuts, hence my current long braid.

Good luck with your decision.....luckily it all grows back.

    1. Thank you, Ceci, for your kind comment. I'm retired, casual, sew, play golf and bridge, occasional gardening, housework etc. It can be helpful to tie hair back for golf but not essential. Shorter styles mean more cuts but longer style, I end up shoving it behind my ears which I don't think is a good look. Yes, it all grows back!

  7. I like 5, 8 and 9 on you, basically shorter with some layers, helps have body and movement. Good luck.

    1. Thank you - 5 and 9 are coming up on the outside - yesterday it was 6 in the lead. Yes, the longer style lacks body and movement.

    1. Thank you, Margaret. Not at all awkward, I guess I liked all of these styles at the time, though some more than others!

  9. I'm a new poster/reader. You take a wonderful picture but 5 and 9 look the best. Your face looks more lively. Look forward to seeing the final decision implemented.

    1. Thank you for visiting, reading and commenting, Catherine. I need to do something soon - I last got it trimmed 13 weeks ago tomorrow and usually it struggles after 6 or 7 so no wonder it's not working. Shorter hair does need trimmed more often

  10. Hello Anne, I like #5 best. it has a very natural and youthful look and frames your face well. I can't wait to see what you decide on.

    1. Thank you, Barbara. I'm still trying to find a suitable hairdresser - there are so many that it should be easy but that makes it harder! I'll take advice there too.

  11. Hello Anne
I don't know you in real life, only on your blog, so I don't know that I am qualified to comment but I like 5 best of all. Whatever you decide a new haircut always feels good

    1. Thank you, Rosemary. I'm delighted that you commented. 5 and 6 are close runners. I'm procrastinating as I don't have a new hairdresser as yet though I have a recommendation. It had to be soon though!

    1. Thanks, Sue. I'm not planning to dye my hair - I'll keep it 'disco silver' as my children used to call it. Photo 12 is just a good trim away from where I am now. I'm also not sure about whether to chop the front side parting hair or continue to grow it to the same length as the rest. When trimmed it's a fairly classic bob.
